PASSING OF HERBERT E. FARMER at 89 years of age.
A Student, Professor Emeritus, Associate Dean and Film Archivist
at the University of Southern California from 1938-2009 - 71 years.

  • Herb was one of only two Americans present at the first CILECT meeting in Cannes in 1953.
  • He went overseas on numerous occasions for International Standards Meetings in the 70's-80's-90's.  The first meeting attended was in Munich in 1973.  He was a member of the International Electrotechnical Commission - Technical Committee No. 84: Equipment and Systems in the Field of Audio, Video and Audiovisual Engineering.  He was the Chairman of the committee in The Hague in 1991, Beijing in 1990, Prague in 1989, Istanbul in 1988, London in 1987, Tokyo in 1986, Frankfurt in 1984, Tokyo in 1982.  The last meeting he attended was in Athens in 1993.
  • In 1965 Herb headed a delegation of four U.S. film professionals to go to the U.S.S.R. to study their film industry. He was the only educator on the trip.  The Russians had sent a delegation to the United States earlier that year or in 1964.  Very few U.S.A citizens visited the U.S.S.R. during those Cold War Years.  
  • He also went to Spain in the 1955 as a goodwill trip with UFVA to study their film industry.
